MELASMA &
HYPERPIGMENTATION
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that makes some areas of the skin darker than others, including conditions like melasma, age spots, and acne scars. Hyperpigmentation can appear as brown, black, gray, red or pink spots or patches. The spots are sometimes called age spots, sun spots or liver spots, and can occur in just one area of the body or all over.
Skin gets its color from a substance called melanin, which is made by skin cells. When those skin cells are damaged or unhealthy, they can produce too much melanin. The melanin can clump, causing that area to appear darker.
Melasma is a specific type of hyperpigmentation characterized by dark patches, often on the face, triggered by hormonal changes and sun exposure. While sun exposure can worsen both melasma and hyperpigmentation, melasma is more strongly associated with hormonal fluctuations, particularly during pregnancy.
At Rise Medical Aesthetics we provide a variety of hyperpigmentation treatments and medical-grade skin care products that will address this reoccurring skin condition. Hyperpigmentation can be reduced and eliminated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photo facial, while melasma is most effectively treated with Chemical Peels. Microneedling is also clinically proven to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and melasma. Our skin specialist Brianna McGavin LMA will evaluate your skin condition during your consultation and create a treatment plan and an at-home skin care program that will restore your skin health and even your skin tone.
